GS1 Barcodes are often used to label fresh foods. These barcodes can hold various information, for example an item's batch or lot number, serial number, or expiry date, in addition to other attributes used at the point-of-sale, such as the item weight.

Note: When the GS1 BarcodeV1 Setup page is run for the first time, the default values are created. Default values can also be recreated by running the Insert Default Data action. This action is accessible from the Retail Setup page.

  1. Click the icon, enter Retail Setup, and select the relevant link.
  2. On the Retail Setup page, click the Insert Default Data action.
  3. On the Selection FastTab, select the GS1 BarcodeV1 Setup check box, and click the Insert action.

To set up the support for GS1 Barcode Version 1

Note: The definitions below also apply to Version 2, but the data is not used by Version 2.

  1. Click the icon, enter GS1 BarcodeV1 Setup, and select the relevant link.
  2. On the GS1 BarcodeV1 Setup page you can now see a description of the various segments of the GS1 Barcodes that are supported by Version 1. The segments in the GS1 Barcode start with an Identifier and are followed by a value which usually is of a fixed length.

The following table describes the available Section Mapping values:

Value Description
GTIN (EAN) All GS1 Barcodes have the GTIN (EAN) segment which starts with 01 and is followed by a 14 digit EAN barcode. The EAN barcode has leading zeros.

Example: In the CRONUS Demo company, item 20030 Apple, Golden Delicious, has this Barcode No.: 1332225560441.
If you want to create GS1 Barcodes for this item, the GTIN (EAN) segment must be like this: 0101332225560441 or (01)01332225560441.
The first two digits in the GS1 Barcode, 01, are the segment identifier.
These are followed by a single 0 , which is a leading zero because the actual barcode is only 13 digits long and the GTIN (EAN) segment must always consist of 14 digits.

Lot No. The GS1 Barcode can contain a segment with a Lot No., also called a batch no.
The Lot No. segment has an identifier of 10 and it is followed by up to 20 characters.

The Lot No. segment has variable length, so it should always be the last segment in a GS1 Barcode.

If the item described in the GTIN (EAN) paragraph above has a segment with a Lot No., the GS1 Barcode could look like this: 010133222556044110182-83-55 or (01)01332225560441(10)182-83-55.
The first two digits, 01, indicate that the next 14 characters are the EAN barcode (with a leading zero). The 17th and 18th digits, 10, are the identifier for the Lot No. and the following characters represent the Lot No. The Lot No. can be up to 20 characters long.

Exp. Date and Best Bef. Date The GS1 Barcode can have a segment with information on the Expiration Date or Best Before Date.

The segment identifier for the Exp. Date is 15, the length of the date field is 6 digits, and the date must be formatted so the first two digits represent the year, the next two digits represent the month, and the last two digits represent the day: YYMMDD.

If the item described in the GTIN (EAN) paragraph above has a segment with an Expiration Date, the Barcode could look like this: 010133222556044115170930 or (01)01332225560441(15)170930.
The first two digits, 01, indicate that the next 14 characters are the EAN barcode (with a leading zero).
The 17th and 18th digits, 15, are the identifier for the Expiration Date and the following 6 characters, 170930, represent the Expiration Date (YYMMDD) or the 30th of September 2017.

If the GS1 Barcode has a segment with identifier 17 or Best Before Date, then that segment is treated exactly in the same way as the Expiry Date segment.

LS Retail does not have a specific field in the Trans. Sales Entry table for the Best Before date, so the Best Before Date in the GS1 Barcode is stored in the Expiration Date field in the Trans. Sales Entry table.

Serial No. The GS1 Barcode can have a segment with the item's serial no.

The identifier for the Serial No. segment is 21 and the length of the serial no. must not be greater than 20 characters.

Example: In the CRONUS Demo company, item 60130 ACE Washing Machine has an Item Tracking code for Serial No. and this 13-digit EAN barcode: 4664525868598. Also in the Demo company, a few of these items are available in Store S0001, so if you want to use a GS1 Barcode to sell one of these items, the GS1 Barcode could be like this: 010466452586859821ABC123456B or (01)04664525868598(21)ABC123456B.
This GS1 Barcode has two segments, first the GTIN (EAN) segment and then the Serial No. segment. It is identified with 21, and in this example the serial no. is ABC123456B.

When this GS1 Barcode is scanned on the POS, the system will insert the Serial No. automatically and the POS operator will not be prompted for the serial no.

Labels with GS1 Barcodes containing Serial No. can be printed from the Retail Item List page, see image below.
On the Retail ltems page find the relevant item, click the Related action menu, click Labels and Printing and select the GS1 Barcodes with Serial Nos option.

Note: This report will only print labels with barcodes from the Item Ledger Entry table and only available serial numbers will be printed.

Weight (kg) and Weight (g) The GS1 Barcode can have a segment with the item's weight, either in kilograms or grams.

The identifier for Weight (kg) is 3100 and the identifier for Weight (g) is 3103. Note that the length of these identifiers is 4 digits. The Section Size for both the Weight (kg) and the Weight (g) sections is 6 digits.

The GTIN (EAN) paragraph mentioned item 20030 Apple, Golden Delicious. That item has EAN barcode 1332225560441. If your vendor provides you with these apples in 5 kg bags, you could create a GS1 Barcode with weight in kilograms for the bags.
The barcode will look like this: 01013322255604413100000005 or (01)01332225560441(3100)000005.

For the same bags you can also have GS1 Barcodes with the weight in grams. These barcodes will look like this: 01013322255604413103005000 or (01)01332225560441(3103)005000.

Weight (lbs) and Weight (lbs 3 decimals) The GS1 Barcode can have a segment with the item's weight in whole pounds (lbs) or in pounds (lbs) with 3 decimals.

The identifier for Weight (lbs) is 3200 and the identifier for Weight (lbs 3 decimals) is 3203.
Note that the length of these identifiers is 4 digits. The Section Size for the Weight (lbs) and Weight (lbs) (3 decimals) sections is 6 digits.

The GTIN (EAN) paragraph mentioned item 20030 Apple, Golden Delicious. That item has EAN barcode 1332225560441. If your vendor provides you with these apples in 8 pound (lbs) bags, you could create a GS1 Barcode with weight in pounds (lbs) for the bags.
The barcodes will look like this: 01013322255604413200000008 or (01)01332225560441(3200)000008.

For the same bags you can also have GS1 Barcodes with the weight in Lbs 3 decimals. These barcodes will look like this: 01013322255604413203008000 or (01)01332225560441(3203)008000.
