Splitting a Bag Into Two

Splitting a bag divides one open bag into two separate bags. The original bag is updated to hold the remainder amount, and a new bag is created with the amount you specify. A common reason to split is a partial bank deposit: you want to send only a portion of a bag to the bank without unpacking the whole bag. After splitting you can transfer the new bag independently (see Sending Part of the Amount from an Open Bag to the Bank or G/L).

When you trigger the split, the system presents a counting form with two modes:

  • By Denomination — you enter the quantities of each coin and note denomination that will go into the new bag. The system subtracts those denomination amounts from the original bag line by line.
  • Only Total — you enter a single total amount for the new bag. The system records the new bag without denomination detail. Use this mode when you have not physically separated the coins and notes.

To split a bag using By Denomination

  1. Click the icon, enter Store Safe List, and select the relevant link.
  2. Select the safe and on the Related menu choose Safe - Open Bags. The Safe Bag List opens.
  3. Select the bag you want to split.
  4. On the Actions menu, choose Safe Bag - Split Bag. The counting form opens showing the current denomination breakdown of the bag.
  5. For each denomination row, enter the quantity that should be transferred to the new bag in the input column. Rows with a zero quantity remain fully in the original bag.
  6. Choose OK to confirm the denomination entries.
  7. A confirmation message is displayed asking you to confirm the split of the bag. Choose Yes.
  8. A message confirms that a new bag has been created, showing the new bag number.

To split a bag using Only Total

The counting form opens.
  5. Choose the Only Total action to switch to total-entry mode. A single Total row appears.
  6. Enter the amount that should go into the new bag in the total field, then choose OK.
  7. A confirmation message is displayed asking you to confirm the split. Choose Yes.
  8. A message confirms that a new bag has been created, showing the new bag number.

After the split, the Safe Bag List displays both the original bag (with the reduced amount) and the newly created bag. The two bags have independent bag numbers and can be transferred or processed separately.

Note: The split is recorded in the Safe Bag Change Log, which you can view from the bag card via Safe Bag - Change Log.
